HOW TO REPAINT YOUR MUSTANG
Restoring the paint on your Mustang can be a great undertaking, since you want the best possible look. If you have original paint that is oxidized (and usually non-metallic), it could be rubbed out and finished with Wax Shop Products (see our catalog).

If the paint and body cannot be detailed to your satisfaction, you'll have to repaint. There are many sources of information on automotive paint, including Hot Rod, Car Craft, etc., car magazines that highlight an article on painting every Spring. A trip to your local automotive retailer will be a good idea to learn of the latest paints and techniques. You should obtain a copy of the "PPG Refinish Manual", at a PPG/ Ditzler Dealer. It explains from "A to Z" about automotive paint and what works best.

Currently, the rage is using a high tech type primer, and a two-part basecoat/clearcoat system for high gloss and durability (which is used on todays new cars). Your Mustangs original factory pain was acrylic enamel, which in an updated form is also a very good choice. Lacquer type paint looks great, but as a rule, doesn't wear as well in daily use, in the sun and elements. It's primarily a Show Car/Custom Car type of paint. We suggest you research and pick the paint you want to use, decide on an original color or new color, and arrange with a body shop to use that paint.

Preparing you Mustang for paint can be a major part of its restoration. One way to save a lot of time, effort and money, is to visit a "Media Stripper" Shop, which uses fine plastic media pellets and compressed air to strip old paint, grease and unwanted debrs. It's an efficient way to get all of your old paint off without using chemicals. It's safe for fiber-glass and, if desired, can remove only one layer of paint at a time.

So briefly, an optimum way to restore your Mustangs paint is to: disassemble the car as much as possible; take it on a trailer to " Mr. Strip it" (or a similar shop); take the stripped body, new sheet metal, etc., to your Body and Painr Shop (with your paint of choice) and have them do it; bring it home and re-assemble the trim, interior, etc.

This, of course, is the short version, but a way you can approach this with less hassle than months and years of handwork, and save you a lot of money on a great looking car!
