Installing a modern T5 5-speed transmission in a 1965-70 Mustang is quite easy. The gear ratio of the T5 provides better acceleration and the 5th speed provides excellent fuel mileage gains for highway driving.

The only real difference between a early 3 or 4-speed transmission and the T5 5-speed is the additional length of the T5. To adjust for this difference, you must choose between two bell housings.
If you choose to use your 65-73 bell housing, you will need a adapter plate that allows for the difference in length and bolt pattern of the T5. If you choose a T5 bell housing you must remove the factory fulcrum and install a early style fulcrum.

Once you have decided on the bell housing, the rest is simple. Sacramento Mustang provides installation kits for either bell housing choice plus we offer machine service to modify the late model bell housing.

Super-Duty 5 Speed

We suggest using a 10.5" diameter 157 tooth flywheel from Motorsport (be sure to match the unbalance to the motor), and 5.0 10.5" pressure plate & disc assembly. The 5.0 clutch assembly uses the diaphragm style pressure plate versus the early Mustang which uses a three finger "Long & Beck" style pressure plate. The diaphragm style clutch distributes pressure evenly around the flywheel surface and has a softer pedal feel. Always use a early style throughout bearing.

To install the flywheel and clutch assembly on the engine (we recommend using ARP flywheel bolts), bolt up the bell housing and install the T5 transmission. Install T5 new slip yoke on your original driveline and install. You can hook up all the factory 65-73 clutch linkage and speedometer cable. Be sure to replace worn or bent clutch linkage items!!

You can use original T5 shifters, or you can use one of our custom shift handles. We have a chrome shifter handle that looks like a factory 1965-67 4-speed handle but bolts to T5 shifter. Install a factory shift boot and shift knob and you are done!!
